Have you ever been told your hygiene "could be better?" We probably all have at one time or another, and it's common for those with braces to have challenges in this department. There are some simple, daily things you can do (and not do) that will help you not only improve your hygiene, but maintain it too! Check out our tips below!

What to do:

  1. Brush twice a day! Morning (to brush away the germs that cause bad breath - such as those from sleeping, coffee, etc.) and night! (brush away the food particles and germs from the day).

  2. Floss your teeth each day! Did you know without flossing you could be missing up to 30% of the surface of your teeth?

  3. Drink more water! Water helps to wash away germs, loose food particles and bacteria. It also helps keep up your saliva production which helps to clean your mouth too! Lack of hydration can actually contribute to bad breath.

  4. Use mouthwash: It's a quick way in a pinch to rinse away surface bacteria and freshen breath. It's also an effective tool for use after brushing as well. Be sure to follow the directions and find the type that's best for your needs.

  5. Clean your tongue! The surface of the tongue can house the bacteria that causes bad breath. Your toothbrush is a great tool, otherwise you can pick up a tongue brush/scraper at most local stores that sell oral hygiene products.

What not to do:

  1. Avoid smoking and tobacco products. Not only can these products cause damage, they contribute to poor oral hygiene and raise the risk of multiple oral cancers.

  2. Avoid sugary drinks, snacks and sticky candy and foods. They can be challenging to totally brush away, which can lead to decay, cavities and other conditions. A little bit every now and then isn't a bad thing, but too much too frequently can be problematic.
